The Provenance Layer: Why Commerce Platforms Must Move Beyond the Sale

What this paper covers

Commerce platforms have optimised almost everything up to the moment of checkout and almost nothing after it. Once a parcel leaves the warehouse, the platform's knowledge of the physical item effectively ends — which is precisely the window in which counterfeits are substituted, returns are swapped, and grey-market goods re-enter the channel. The trust cost lands on the platform even when the fault sits with a merchant.

This strategy paper argues that product-level authenticity is becoming platform infrastructure in the same way payments and identity did. Regulation is pushing in the same direction: the EU Digital Product Passport will require a per-item data carrier and a persistent record behind it for a widening set of categories, and no marketplace wants each of ten thousand merchants solving that independently.

It also explains, bluntly, why printed QR codes do not solve this. A printed code is copyable by anyone with a camera, so it can convey information but cannot prove authenticity. The paper closes with an integration model — where the seal is applied in the supply chain, what the platform stores, and how verification is exposed in existing product and order surfaces without replatforming.
