What Is Digital Provenance Technology?

Digital Provenance Technology™ (DPT™) is a system that binds a single physical item to a verifiable digital record of its origin and history. Where a traditional certificate or label lives separately from the product it describes, DPT ties the record directly to the individual unit — so anyone can confirm that a specific item is authentic, where it came from, and that it hasn't been tampered with. It answers a question labels can't: not "does a genuine version of this product exist," but "is THIS one genuine."

The problem DPT solves: proof that floats free of the product

Certificates, holograms, and printed labels can all be copied, reused, or swapped, because the proof and the physical item travel separately. A certificate proves that a genuine item exists somewhere. It does not prove that the item in your hand is that one.

That gap is exactly where counterfeiting, refilling, and swapping happen. A genuine bottle is emptied and refilled. A graded collectible is moved into a different holder. A premium cut, jar, or handbag is paired with paperwork that belongs to another unit. Spirits, collectibles, food, and luxury goods all share the same structural weakness: the document and the object can be separated.

How Digital Provenance Technology works

DPT has three parts working together.

  1. 1. A tamper-evident NFC seal

    An NXP NTAG 424 DNA chip — standard or TagTamper — is applied to the individual item. Tapping it with a phone opens that item's record. If the seal is interfered with, the tamper is visible and recorded.

  2. 2. A provenance registry

    The registry stores the item's record — origin, attestations, and chain-of-custody events — and updates as the item changes hands, so the history grows rather than being rewritten.

  3. 3. A verification experience

    Anyone can scan or tap to see who verified what, and when — no account, no app, and no special hardware.

DPT references existing authorities — registries, laboratories, and certification bodies — rather than replacing them. Their findings become attestations attached to the item's record.

Attestation levels: what "verified" actually means

Not all claims carry the same weight, and good provenance is transparent about which is which. A tiered model makes the difference legible:

  • Registry record (owner-attested) — the item exists in the registry with details supplied by its owner.
  • Sealed (tamper-evident from date applied) — an owner or dealer has applied a tamper-evident seal, so the item's state is verifiable from that date forward.
  • Event-verified — an authorised party inspected the item before sealing it. This is the highest trust signal.

The point is not to flatten everything into a single "verified" badge. It is to show the buyer exactly who verified what, so trust is earned by evidence rather than asserted.

Authentication tiers: NFC, QR, and visual

Verification is layered so it works across a range of products and buyer situations. An NFC tap is the primary and strongest signal: the chip produces a fresh cryptographic response on every tap, which cannot be photographed or copied.

DPT vs. blockchain "authentication"

DPT is registry-anchored and outcome-focused. The goal is checkable proof bound to a physical item, not the adoption of a particular database technology. A provenance registry may be backed by a ledger for tamper-resistance, but that is an implementation detail: the buyer experience is a simple tap-to-verify, with no wallet, no token, and no technical knowledge required.

Authentication products marketed primarily on their underlying ledger foreground the technology instead of the verification outcome. Both approaches can be sound. The distinction worth understanding is what the buyer is actually asked to do, and whether the proof is bound to the individual physical item at all.
